James Sirmans was born Feb. 1, 1815 in Emanuel Co., son of Abner and Elizabeth Sirmans. He ma rried Charlotte Sears, born 1820, daughter of David Sears. James Sirmans served as a privat e in the Indian War in Capt. John J. Johnson's company, 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 1 6to Dec. 18, 1837. Mr. Sirmans lived in 586th militia district of Ware Co. in the 1840 census , the territory of which in those days, embraced all of the 7th land districts,and he lived n ear his wife's father's home in the upper portion of thedistrict. Later, or by 1850, he ha d moved to the 10th land district ofClinch, which was a portion cut into Lowndes in that year . After living there about five years he moved across the Alapaha River into Berrien Co., an d bought a farm near Empire Primitive Church, where he lived until he died in 1882. His wif e died June 10, 1893. They were buried at Empire Church. Mr. Sirmans was a member of Empire C hurch, being baptized into membership Oct. 18, 1866. Abner Sirmans, son of Josian Sirmans, was born in Effingham County about1790, and died at hi s home in Early County in 1837. He was married about1808 to Elizabeth Kirkland, born in Effi ngham County (now Bulloch) about1790, daughter of Richard Kirkland. Mr Sirmans was cut out of Bulloch County into Emanuel County in itscreation in 1812, and live d there until 1822 when he and his family movedin company with his parents and brothers and 1 st cousins, Moses, John andWilliam Tomlinson, to what was then Irwin County where they locate d onthe east side of the Alapaha River in present Lanier County. There,Abner Sirmans and fam ily lived until 1833 when they moved to EarlyCounty. After Mr. Sirman's death in Early Count y, the widow and most ofthe children moved back to the old home-section in what was at the ti meLowndes County. They were cut out of Lowndes into Clinch County in1850. Mrs. Sirmans die d about 1865 and was buried in the nearby FenderCemetery; grave unmarked. Abner Sirmans was Justice of Peace in the 664th District, Lowndes County,1827-1833. Kirkland marrie Celete (called Saleta) Mattox born 1825 inTattnall County, daughter of Aaron and Elizabeth Futch Mattox; she died June6,1862. They had four children. Mr, Kirkland served in the Indian War as aprivate under Capt. John J . Johnson, 2nd Regiment Florida Militia, forsix months in 1937, and as a private in Capt. Lev i J. Knights company ofLowndes County militia for two months in 1838. James L. Kirkland wasba ptized July, 1848, into the membership of Pleasant Primitive BaptistChurch in Lowndes Count y (now Berrien) , and the church records show hedied a member in 1853. He was married in Lowndes (now Berrien County, Feb. 11, 1847, to Rachel, daughte r of John Sutton (Vol.III). She was born Nov. 15, 1828 in Lowndes, (now Berrien) County. Mr. Lindsey lived on the present Nashville -Adel highway west of the river forming the prese nt county-line between Cook and Berrien Counties;territory until 1918, in Berrien County. H e served as Justice of Peace, 1156 district, 1857-1869, and was a member of the Berrien Count y Board of Commissioners, 1872-1876. In 1881, he was elected Ordinary in January,and took of fice but died the same year, Nov. 20, 1881. Mrs. Lindsey died July 10, 1904. They were buri ed in the cemetery at Salem Church, now the city (Woodlawn) cemetery in Adel. In 1840 Lowndes census. According to Betty Fulwood Bell, middle name was Charlton. Martin Shaw (Jr.), son of Martin Shaw was born in SC April 1, 1803. He died suddenly at his h ome in Berrien Co. (now Cook), two miles east of Adel, Nov. 7, 1876. He was married in 1839 , to Elizabeth Mathis, daughter of James and Rhoda Monk Mathis; she was born in Berrien Count y, Feb. 3,1816, and died June 11, 1862 in Berrien (now Cook) County. Mr. Shaw in addition t o the above children, had another one, Ashley M. Shaw, married Nov.1, 1866, Elizabeth T. Mor ris. Martin Shaw after his first wife's death again married, the second wife was Mrs. Matild a Sharpe of ColquittCo. She was born June 22, 1824, died July 10, 1910 and was buried at Buck Creek Baptist Church in Colquitt Co. Mr. Shaw served in the Indian War in Capt. Lervi J. Knig hts company of Lowndes County Militia in 1838. He was Sheriff of Lowndes Co. 1836-38, and a t that time, and for several years afterwards, lived at or near old Franklinville, the then c ounty-site of Lowndes Co. He was cut out of Lowndes Co. into Berrien in 1856, and was electe d one of the first Justices of The Inferior Court of the new county, serving 1856-1861. He se rved as County Commissioner of Berrien Co., 1872-73. Mr. Shaw and his first wife were burie d in the cemetery at Old Salem Church, now in the City of Adel and known as the City (Woodlaw n) Cemetery.
